SUBJECT: Marine Institute to sign memorandum of understanding with Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre

Memorial University's Fisheries and Marine Institute and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) will renew its five-year memorandum of understanding today and explore new ways to increase cooperation in Southeast Asia to promote sustainable fisheries development. Three members of the SEAFDEC delegation have traveled from Bangkok, Thailand this week to sign the new MOU. Mr. Newis Ruangpanit, secretary general, Mr. Bundit Chokesanguan, head of Information and Extension Division, Mr. Somnuk Pornpatimakorn, administrative and finance co-ordinator and Mr. Leslie O'Reilly, MI's executive director, will be on hand for the signing.

The MOU will allow for knowledge sharing and technology transfer in the area of sustainable aquatic resources, safety at sea for small scale fishers, and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) associated with professional development of SEAFDEC staff as well as adapting traditional training programs to an e-learning environment. MI has also placed eleven student interns at SEAFDEC offices in Thailand and the Philippines since 1998.

The MOU signing will take place on Tuesday, Aug, 5th, 2003 at 3:30 p.m. in the main boardroom of the Marine Institute, located on 155 Ridge Road. The main board room is located on the main floor. Media agencies are encouraged to send representatives.
