SUBJECT: Bell Island: Partnering in Healthy Pursuits 2007
DATE: March 21, 2007

Media Advisory:
Bell Island has weathered many storms in its history, and even today faces daunting challenges. Led by its Health and Wellness Advisory Council, Bell Islanders have identified many of the challenges facing its population: its children, youth, adults and seniors.
The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development, the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research and the Bell Island Health and Wellness Advisory Council present Bell Island: Partnering in Healthy Pursuits 2007 at St. Michael’s Parish Hall, Bell Island, Thursday, March 22, 2007. The event will provide the opportunity for local champions of this initiative to meet representatives of other organizations with a stake in the well-being of Bell Island: federal and provincial government departments and agencies, health care service organizations, academia, and non-profit organizations. The ferry departs from Portugal Cove at 4:10 p.m. and then departs from Bell Island at 8:10 p.m. The Advisory Council will transport guests to and from the ferry to St. Michael’s Parish Hall.
Using the Determinants of Health Framework, the Advisory Council successfully completed Phase I of the Bell Island Health and Well-Being Needs Assessment.

Phase I culminated in the release of the Harrop Report October 2006. This ground-breaking report marks the transition from thinking of health care as the sole responsibility of the health care system to recognizing that individuals, the community and the traditional health care delivery system have equally important roles to play in the health and well-being of Bell Island’s citizenry. Now the Advisory Council is set to embark on Phase II: creating the blueprint for moving forward.

As well, the Phase I report recommended that Bell Island has the potential to become a living/learning laboratory for the Determinants of Health and for primary care research in Canada.
Findings from Phase 1 study will be highlighted and an outline of Phase 2 will be provided. A detailed agenda is attached.
