REF NO.: 80
SUBJECT: Demonstration of mobile simulation
DATE: April 6,2017
Note to editors:
The Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University will host a demonstration of in mobile tele-simulation that is being developed to teach physicians and health-care providers in the province.
Media are welcome to attend and learn more about the positive impact this teaching method will have on health-care services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The mobile unit, which resembles a large, 20-foot diameter dome tent, allows the medical school to deliver simulation-based learning to rural areas.
The project, led by Drs. Michael Parsons and Adam Dubrowski, from the Discipline of Emergency Medicine, is exploring the use of a portable simulation unit that integrates telecommunications to help deliver quality, simulation-based teaching and debriefing to rural and remote areas of the province.
The mobile tele-simulation unit provides the flexibility that is needed to offer training through lifelike simulation situations. The unit is set up so that a medical educator is able to either teach on-site in a rural area or facilitate training from an off-site location. Learners communicate with the mentor using the unit’s telecommunications technology.
There will be an opportunity to see the tent and mobile simulation equipment in action.
Dr. Parsons will demonstrate chest tube placement, a lifesaving skill necessary to release pressure and help with a patient’s breathing.
Local media are welcome to attend the demonstration taking place on Friday, April 7, at 10 a.m. in the Medical Education Centre, Faculty of Medicine on the St. John’s campus.
