REF NO.: 12

SUBJECT: PSA: President of American Physical Society to give public lecture at Memorial

DATE: October 25, 2017

Dr. Laura H. Greene, the president of the American Physical Society, will present a public lecture at Memorial University.

Her public lecture titled High-Temperature Superconductivity: The Dark Energy of Condensed Matter, will take place on Friday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. in the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, room IIC-2001.

A reception will follow, limited free parking is available in lot 17. All are welcome.

Superconductivity is a fascinating quantum mechanical phenomenon, which at low temperatures allows transmission of electrical power with no loss and magnetic levitation, as well as other intriguing phenomena.

Dr. Greene’s lecture will include some demonstrations, and she will define what a superconductor is, describe some of the bizarre behaviour of electrons in unconventional superconductors and the analogy in the lecture title.
