REF NO.: 81

SUBJECT: Annual Ocean Literacy Conference taking place at the Marine Institute

DATE: July 11, 2018

All hands will be on deck for the 2018 Ocean Literacy Conference hosted by the Canadian Network for Ocean Education (CaNOE) from July 13-15 at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus in St. John’s.

More than 60 delegates — ocean educators, scientists and special interest groups from across Canada — will come together to develop a uniquely Canadian perspective on what it means to be ocean literate and to help shape a national ocean literacy strategy.

Dr. Wendy Watson-Wright, CEO, Ocean Frontier Institute, and Dr. Lisa (Diz) Glithero, adjunct professor, University of Ottawa, and education lead, Canada C3, will deliver keynote addresses.

Over three days, CaNOE will celebrate and learn from successful efforts in ocean education across the country, including Indigenous experiences, four workshops and more than 20 presentations.

Presentations and discussions will explore four ocean literacy sub-themes: culture, education and communication, science and technology, and stewardship and advocacy.

Delegates will address specific questions to help identify local actions that align with a “roadmap” that is being developed to create an ocean literacy strategy for Canada.
