SUBJECT: Symposium on past and future of archives in Newfoundland and Labrador

Members of the media are invited to attend a symposium Friday, Nov. 6, 2009 on the topic Examining the archival footprint: the past and future of archives in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Time: 9:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Location: Main Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine, Health Sciences Centre
Featured speakers:
9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
Dr. Daniel J. Caron, librarian and archivist of Canada, will speak about Archival work and the 21st century: humanity and technology as new sources of diversity and complexity.
12 noon -1 p.m.
Dr. Max House, OC, ONL, MD, LLD, FRCPC: professor emeritus and honorary research professor, Memorial University and former Lieutenant Governor of this province, will give a talk on The story of Telemedicine in Newfoundland and Labrador: where do we go from here?
Discussion sessions throughout the day include Greg Walsh, provincial archivist, The Rooms Provincial Archives Division, on The next 50 years: perspectives from the Provincial Archives.
Colleen Quigley, University of Toronto, will speak on A Time to dance and a time to archive: thinking about archives and dance.
Jessie Chisholm, archivist with the Rooms Provincial Archives Division, will speak on Documenting scoundrels, scandal and scurvy: government records in 19th century Newfoundland.
The day’s activities will conclude with a Round Table Discussion on the Future of Archives in Newfoundland and Labrador.
