SUBJECT: SIFE Memorial launches second Based in Business camp; students help Canadian Forces Members build entrepreneurial skills and ideas

DATE: August 10, 2010

This news release is been sent out on behalf of SIFE Memorial University.

Today marks the second day of SIFE Memorial’s second Based in Business camp.
Based in Business is an exciting project run by SIFE Memorial. In its second year, this program is helping Canadian Forces Members, who have an entrepreneurial venture or idea, gain valuable business skills to make their venture sustainable. Throughout the day professors from the Faculty of Business Administration give their time to teaching the participants. In the evening SIFE volunteers work with the Canadian Forces participants to apply what they learned to their personal business.
“I see the Based in Business program as a natural fit for Memorial because of our history,” said Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor of Memorial University. “It’s another way we can continue to honour the memory of those for whom this university was founded, and I congratulate members of SIFE Memorial for bringing it to fruition.”
Currently there are nine participants at the Memorial University campus for the week-long training camp component of Based in Business. When the
participants leave the university, they will be armed with a wealth of business knowledge as well as support from SIFE Memorial and the Institute of Chartered Accountants to assist in the startup phase of their business.
The weeklong event is made possible with the support of many volunteers and sponsors, all of whom understand the value in the experience for the participants.
“The SIFE Memorial team is excited and proud to work with our participants and help them transition to their new careers,” said Lynn Morrissey, assistant professor, Faculty of Business Administration, and faculty advisor to the SIFE Memorial Team. “The tremendous support we’ve received from our faculty, university and community is a testament to everyone's eagerness to give back to those who have served our country.”
