SUBJECT: Grenfell: TNL Youth Theatre brings stories of the world to Corner Brook stage

The young people of TNL’s Youth Theatre Program will wow audiences with tales of the globe with the production Here and There, scheduled for April 26 at the Corner Brook Arts and Culture Centre as part of TNL’s Festival of Youth.
“The caliber of the talent in Here and There is simply amazing,” said Sara…h MacDonald Anderson, Artistic Associate (Youth & Outreach). “These young actors have worked very hard and the resulting work – a show which aims to bring global cultures together on one stage – is astounding.”
Here and There tells indigenous stories from around the world. The plays will be performed using different theatre styles, such as Japanese Kabuki/Noh, chorus-style, pantomime and puppetry.
The Canadian component, "Manteau Becomes a Man," is an Innu story that was written for the stage by a group of students at Mushuau Innu Natuashish School in Labrador. Ms. McDonald Anderson learned of the play during her participation in the Labrador Creative Arts Festival in Goose Bay last November.
“I was invited as an animateur, and conducted workshops and adjudicated plays,” she said, adding that artistic professionals from across Canada were flown into isolated areas of Labrador to conduct workshops and work with young people in various artistic disciplines. “This story leaped off the stage and I realized that this was something I had to incorporate in our work at TNL. Manteau Becomes a Man is a well known legend among their culture and we’re pleased to have it represent Canada in our show.”
Mushuau Innu Natuashish School is in the process of securing funding to bring the 10 children involved in the writing of the play to attend Here and There in Corner Brook.
“In our version we will be including puppetry, which lends an ethereal look to the production,” said Ms. McDonald Anderson. “We’re very excited to find out the students’ reactions to their original script. It’s amazing that they may be able to attend our production.”
In addition to the Canadian story, Here and Now brings to the stage six other tales from Japan, Africa, the United States, South America, Ireland and India.
Here and There is directed by Sara…h MacDonald Anderson. Toshon Dawe is guest director for two of the stories and Karla Payne is back in the stage management seat. Harry Tibbo’s set design and lights will be enhanced with the costume and puppet artistry of Wendy Vey of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College’s theatre program.
“Anyone who has attended our shows in the past five years has witnessed the incredible array of costumes by Wendy Vey. She will be designing and building costumes for more than 90 roles. We have been so blessed to have her on board for our festival,” says Ms. McDonald-Anderson. “But this show depends on the abilities of the young people who though young are powerhouses of talent, emotion, and dedication. Don’t miss it!”
