SUBJECT: Saskatchewan teachers to discuss role of teachers in curriculum revision at public lecture

Two visiting Saskatchewan teachers, Garry Davis and Kevin Sawatzky, will hold a public lecture on Tuesday, May 13 to share their experiences, both positive and negative, of teaching high school mathematics in Saskatchewan over the past 20 years. Facilitated by the Math Learning Centre (MLC) and sponsored by the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS), the title of the lecture is, Island on the Prairies: The Important Role of Teachers in Curriculum Revision.
In their lecture, Mr. Davis and Mr. Sawatzky will explain the process that Saskatchewan previously used to pilot new mathematics courses and will give ideas on how teachers can become involved in a rich experience of curriculum development even when provinces are moving away from a piloting process. The presenters will also describe some of the initiatives that the Saskatoon Public School Division is considering as they embark on a process of collegiate renewal.
In addition, the recently proposed curriculum revision for K-12 in Newfoundland and Labrador is an adoption of the Western and Northern Canada Protocol (WNCP), which has already been adopted by Saskatchewan. This presentation will also give useful insight into what can be expected in this province as a result of this shift.
Mr. Sawatzky has taught high school mathematics for 21 years with the Saskatoon Public School division while Mr. Davis has been involved with mathematics education for 23 years as a teacher as well as an educational consultant. Both presently teach mathematics at Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon, where they have worked together for the past five years. They are currently in St. John’s to participate in a weeklong training workshop to gain the tools needed to facilitate the incorporation of a remedial program for students based on the program offered at the Math Learning Centre. They intend to pilot such a program for Grade 9 students in their school this fall.
The public lecture is being held in the lecture theatre at the INCO Innovation Centre from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, with a reception in the foyer of the INCO Centre to follow. Free parking is available in area 18, with additional parking in area 17 for $2.30.
