REF NO.: 171

SUBJECT: Memorial University relaunching writer-in-residence program

DATE: February 3, 2006

Memorial University is on the hunt for its next writer-in-residence.

The Department of English Language and Literature is accepting applications from new and established writers for its author residency program for the fall 2006 semester or winter 2007 semester.

The program is subject to the availability of matching funding from the Canada Council and Memorial University. The position is intended to honour writers who have published their work professionally. Previous writers-in-residence have included award-winning authors Kevin Major, Jane Urquhart, Wayne Johnston and Lisa Moore.

Authors will have the opportunity to continue their writing projects while making time available to students and writers within the university or the community. Memorial is strongly encouraging applications that propose innovative ways of bringing Canadian writing to communities both inside and outside of St. John’s.

Authors wishing to be considered for the position are asked to provide a letter of application and curriculum vitae no later than Monday, Feb. 13, 2006.

When the successful candidate is selected, joint application for funding will be made to the author residency program of the Canada Council.

Remuneration for the position, pending approval, will be $12,000.

Written or electronic applications should be addressed to:

Prof. Robert Hollett, head, Department of English Language and Literature, Memorial University, St. John’s, NL, A1C 5S7 or rhollett@mun.ca; telephone: (709)737-8277; fax: (709)737-4528.
