REF NO.: 163

SUBJECT: Memorial journal turns 20 years old

DATE: January 27, 2006

A reception will be held today to mark the 20th anniversary of one of this province’s most respected academic journals

The former Newfoundland Studies now has a new name and a new look and is now officially known as Newfoundland and Labrador Studies. It has been revamped to include a beautifully-designed glossy colour cover which provides information about each edition’s contents.

A small reception – by invitation only for university officials – will be held today, Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, beginning at 4 p.m. in the main lobby of the INCO Innovation Centre on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.

Members of the media are invited to attend. Parking will be available in Lot 18 in front the Queen Elizabeth II Library.

The journal’s roots date back to 1985. Its mandate is to publish original essays, in either English or French, about the society and culture of this province, past and present.

To coincide with the 20th anniversary of Newfoundland and Labrador Studies, its editors plan to start digitizing its entire collection of articles and book reviews – including current and past issues – on its Web site www.mun.ca/nls/.
