German 3010: Advanced German I

Fall 2009

This course aims at a high level of accomplishment in German pronunciation, composition and translation through practice in the spoken language, written exercises and the reading of more advanced literary material. Classes are mainly in German.

Required text: Turneaure, Brigitte M. Der treffende Ausdruck: Texte, Themen, Übungen. 2nd Edition. New York: W. W. Norton, 1996.

(We will cover the first six chapters)

Recommended: A good German-English, English-German dictionary.

Marking Scheme:

Class Preparation and Participation 15%

2 Tests * 20%

4 Assignments ** 20%

Mid-Term Exam (Oct. 19 ) 15%

Final Exam 30%

*These are vocabulary and grammar quizzes on chapters 1, 2, 4 and 5. Estimated dates are Sept. 18, Oct. 2, Nov. 2 and Nov. 18.

**1 translation into English, 1 translation into German, 1 composition and 1 oral presentation. Dates are assigned in the first week of classes.
