Research Description

Subsistence fishing is an important aspect of life in the Arctic for many coastal communities. Clams are of interest in areas such as Qikiqtarjuaq, NU as a potential resource to local Inuit. Research undertaken in the coastal area of Qikiqtarjuaq can provide insight into clam habitat which may assist the local community in decision-making regarding harvesting viability. As a member of the Memorial University Habitat Mapping Group, and in collaboration with the Nunavut Department of Environment, Division of Fisheries and Sealing, I will be mapping benthic clam habitat in the Qikiqtarjuaq area to provide data on clam habitat characteristics and biotope. These data will assist local stakeholders in making informed and sustainable decisions on any future community clam fishery.
