French 4400 The traditional culture of French-Newfoundlanders
This course will examine the traditional French heritage in Newfoundland.  
Particular attention will be paid to the historical context that led to the
emergence of the French-Newfoundlanders as a distinct entity. Instructor: Dr. Anne Pelta.

French 4640 The French essay

In this course on the French essay from the 16th to the 21st century, three books (René DESCARTES, Discours de la méthode, VOLTAIRE, Lettres philosophiques, Jean-Jacques ROUSSEAU, Discours sur l'origine et les fondements de l'inégalité parmi les hommes)as well as a number of shorter texts by Sébastien CASTELLION, Michel de MONTAIGNE, Blaise PASCAL, Claude LÉVI-STRAUSS, Michel SERRES, Olympe de GOUGES, Simone de BEAUVOIR, Marguerite YOURCENAR, Julia KRISTEVA, Madeleine OUELETTE-MICHALSKA and Élisabeth BADINTER will be studied. Please be advised that there is an error in the print version (not the online version) of the 2013-2014 university calendar in section 9.12.1, French Major Program. It should read: Between their first registration at Memorial University of Newfoundland and the time of their graduation, all students majoring in French must have spent at least eight weeks at an approved Francophone institution in a French-speaking area or have acquired equivalent work experience in a Francophone environment.
