Clay
Twenty-six items made of clay were recovered from House 3. The majority of these items were pieces of European manufactured kaolin pipes. At least three different kaolin pipes are represented. The pieces of pipe bowls recovered were manufactured between 1700 and 1790. In addition, one red-brown clay pipe stem was also recovered. This pipe stem is thought to be of Aboriginal origin but the cultural affiliation is still unknown. The small number of pipe fragments present suggests that the inhabitants were smoking but it was likely not a regular practice. Six pieces of roof tile were also recovered. These pieces were likely scavenged from abandoned Basque whaling stations and used by the Inuit as whetstones. |
