WHAT'S ON THE GO AROUND CAMPUS?

Winter Carnival

Winter Carnival is a week long event taking place before mid-term exams in the winter semester. It is organized and run by the MUN Student Union (MUNSU). The week consists of a variety of fun filled competitions designed to promote spirit among on-campus houses. Each house competes for points awarded based on their performance in each competition. At the end of week the residence with the most points emerges the Winter Carnival victor and claims bragging rights for a full year. Some events include a food sculpture, the checkers decathlon, talent show and the always popular lip-sync.

mini International Bazaar

A mini International Bazaar took place in the University Centre on February 6 as part of Memorial’s Go Abroad Fair. The mini bazaar brought together students from every country at Memorial and showcased the different cultures and cuisines on campus. Students attending the fair enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by volunteers from the different international booths. A full international bazaar will be held in the fall as part of I love Mondays.

The March Hare

On March 8, this year’s Grenfell reading was held in the Fine Arts atrium featuring Grace Wells, John K. Samson and Russell Wangersky. The March Hare is Atlantic Canada’s largest poetry festival that originated in 1988 as an innovative but inauspicious winter entertainment in Corner Brook. It has since evolved into a unique trans-Canada celebration of words and music, attracting writers from all over Canada and the world.

Grenfell telescope offers public observing nights

Public observing nights at the new Grenfell Observatory resume on Saturdays in March (except March 16). Each session will begin at 8pm, with a short introductory talk followed by a tour of the observatory and then if the sky is clear an observation through the telescope. If the sky is not clear, a longer talk will precede the tour. Visit Observatory website for more information on the telescope.

SPOTLIGHT ON…

Ryan Dwyer

Ryan Dwyer is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts at the St. John’s campus and plans to complete his major in Classics. Ryan always had a feeling he would study within the arts field, but was surprised at how many different disciplines and options there were at Memorial. He says that university has changed his perspective on many things.

“Memorial University is a university unlike any other. It’s a place where you feel safe, where the professors care, and where there is a community of young students just like you.”
