How to Apply

The School of Social Work at Memorial University offers a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) as both a First Degree and as a Second Degree.

The annual application deadline for both BSW Programs is March 1st.

Applications for admission to the Bachelor of Social Work degree program should be submitted online via the University's Application for Admission/Readmission which can be accessed in the following ways:

Students who are new to Memorial University: Follow the application instructions provided at www.mun.ca/undergrad/apply/.

Current or returning Memorial University students: Use the Admissions menu within Memorial Self-Service (link to https://www5.mun.ca/admit/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin).

The online faculty application section for both the Bachelor of Social Work as a First Degree program (commencing Fall 2017) and the Bachelor of Social Work as a Second Degree program (commencing Winter 2018) will open November 14, 2016. You may start your online application and return to complete and submit it once the faculty application section has opened. However, it will likely be most convenient for you to start and complete your online application at the same time.

In addition to the on-line faculty application, applicants are required to submit two Letter of Appraisal forms (one academic, one professional) and a Verification form for each work/volunteer/community involvement experience you wish to have considered. These forms are available in fillable PDF format and must be returned to the Office of the Registrar as indicated on the corresponding forms. Failure to return these forms will result in your application being deemed incomplete and therefore ineligible for consideration.

Applicants are no longer able to bring forward Letter of Appraisal forms from the previous year's application.

Referees cannot be friends, family or anyone in a personal relationship with you.

An academic referee is an individual who has taught or supervised you at a secondary school or at the university level.

A professional referee is an individual who, by virtue of their professional position or membership in a community group, has directly supervised or mentored you and can comment on your suitability for social work.

Prior to selecting your referees, you are encouraged to review the Letter of Appraisal form. This may assist you in determining referees who are better able to answer all questions, substantiating their ratings.  

Referees may either e-mail, mail or hand deliver the completed Appraisal Form directly to the Office of the Registrar or return to applicant in a sealed envelope with the referee’s signature across the flap of the envelope to indicate that the envelope has not been previously opened.

VERIFICATION FORM (fillable pdf)

Applicants are no longer able to bring forward Verification Forms from the previous year's application. Initially we had hoped that the option to bring forward Verification Forms from the 2016-2017 application year would be available. However, as of December 2, we have determined that this option is no longer possible.  Applicants are encouraged to keep copies of Verification Forms for future reference.

Verification Forms should be e-mailed/mailed to the Office of the Registrar by the Supervisor/Agency Representative/Mentor/Leader after they have reviewed and signed the completed form and verified that the information contained therein is accurate.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all application documents are received by the Office of the Registrar by the application deadline of March 1 or the application will not be considered.

Applicants will normally be notified of admissions decisions late June.
