This section provides a list of relevant regulations, policies, and procedures within the School of Social Work, within the University, and pertaining to student affairs. For example, the first three listings are general information.


Recreation Fee Exemption

All students who are attending courses on campus in St. John’s will be charged the $40.00 per semester Recreation Fee. Students who are recognized as not attending courses on campus in St. John’s will not be assessed the Recreation Fee. Graduate students who are not studying or doing research on the St. John’s Campus at any time during a semester will be eligible to confirm their status and have it verified by their Academic Unit. Once Financial Services has received the completed verification individual graduate students will have their fee reversed. The form is online at: https://www.mun.ca/sgs/rec_form.pdf


Health Benefits

Students are responsible for obtaining health and/or disability coverage for themselves during the MSW program, if so desired. Full-time graduate students are enrolled in the National Student Health Network of the Canadian Federation of Students Health and Dental plans when they register, and fees are collected by the University in all three semesters. Because international students do not have access to provincial medical coverage plans, they are eligible only for dental coverage and are charged accordingly. For an additional fee, students may extend the coverage to their partners, including same sex partners, and their dependent children. The health and dental plan guide provides a reminder to students of some common concerns and questions. It is important to be aware of deadlines related to the plan and of plan coverage.

Full-time graduate students can opt out of GSU Health Benefits by completing and submitting the appropriate forms (with proof of participation in another health plan) prior to the deadline. Students who do not opt out prior to the deadline will be charged the requisite fees for the health plan. Further information is available at www.gsumun.ca

Part-time graduate students are not eligible for enrollment in the National Student Health Network of the Canadian Federation of Students Health and Dental plans. However, part- time students are considered full-time while registered for 6917. REGULATIONS AND POLICIES OF THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK

Leave of Absence Policy

Students may be granted a general or parental leave of absence upon request. A leave of absence is a period of time during which a student is not required to register; no fees are assessed; and the time granted is not counted in the maximum time period permitted for a graduate program. Student Accommodation Policy

Students may have particular mental health or physical challenges or conditions, or other personal circumstances requiring reasonable accommodation by the School. Students requiring accommodation should discuss their circumstances with the course instructor, the Coordinator of MSW Student Services, and/or staff at the Glenn Roy Blundon Centre for Students with Disabilities. Reasonable accommodation includes adjusting a course, program, policy, procedure, or the physical environment that adversely affects the Student without compromising academic integrity or changing the essential educational requirements of the MSW program.

Academic Dishonesty

In the course of a graduate degree program, the student is expected to learn those principles constituting proper academic behaviour. Violations are listed in the School of Graduate Studies General Regulations, Academic Dishonesty.

Convocation

Convocation is held biannually at the end of May and at the end of October. For further information, refer to www.mun.ca/regoff/graduation/

In the semester during which they will be completing the last course of the MSW program, the Colloquium (6432), PATHWAY Scholarship (6417), or their thesis, a student planning to graduate at the next convocation should complete an Application for Graduate Degrees or Diplomas. The application must be completed and submitted to the Office of the Registrar no later than mid-February (for spring graduation) or mid-July (for fall graduation). Prior to graduation, all fees must be paid, including the fees for the remaining semesters, if applicable. See: www.mun.ca/regoff/graduation/

Registration

All graduate students in the first semester of the program are required to register in SCWK9000 (Graduate Registration) to be identified as graduate students. A student who is granted leave from the program must register for SCWK9000 in the semester that they return from leave, even if not registering for courses that semester.

Sexual Harassment

Memorial University is committed to an environment that is respectful and inclusive - and free of sexual harassment. All consultations are confidential – a complaint is not acted upon unless, or until, the Student specifically instructs the Advisor to do so.
