The ability to communicate effectively, work in a team and manage multiple timelines and projects - ‘soft skills’ as they are often referred – are now viewed as being as important as traditional approaches to education and technical training. Several provincial governments and the Canadian Association of Graduate Studies, as well as NSERC, SSHRC and CIHR, have recognized a ‘soft skills’ deficit within the Canadian workforce. In response, MITACS created a Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Program (STEP) which aims to position young Canadians as our future innovators and entrepreneurs.

MITACS: Making Research Count

Since 1999, MITACS has played a leadership role in linking academia, industry and the public sector to develop cutting‐edge tools to support the growth of Canada’s knowledge‐based economy. Every day, we connect businesses—small, medium or large enterprises—as well as government and not‐for‐profits which are facing a research challenge with over 50 of Canada’s premiere universities and researchers to find a solution. Our unique and innovative approach has resulted in a proven track record of success.

MITACS original focus was solely the mathematical sciences, however we have evolved many of our training and networking programs to encompass other disciplines such as chemistry, engineering, business, psychology, the arts and medicine to name but a few. We grew our business because we knew that it would be good for business.
