Laboratory safety for students
All students who expect to take laboratory courses where they may be exposed to hazards in the lab must have appropriate training in WHMIS and Laboratory Safety. They gain this training by taking Science 1807 (Safety in the Science Laboratory), a no-cost, 0 credit, on-line safety training course. This course only needs to be completed in the first semester you encounter lab courses in your academic program, not every time you have a lab course.
Science 1807 is offered online through Brightspace and takes about two hours to complete. Students taking lab courses first register for all their courses including Science 1807 through Memorial Self-Service. After registering it will take up to six hours to gain access to the Science 1807 course. Students can then access the course online through Brightspace using their my.mun.ca login ID. The course consists of a Safety test and a WHMIS test. In order to successfully complete the course, a mark of at least 80% must be achieved on each of the two tests. Students who do not successfully complete Science 1807 by the end of the Add period in a semester will be de-registered from all their Science lab courses requiring it.
