Rural Mental Health Interprofessional Training Programme

Welcome to the website for the Rural Mental Health Interprofessional Training Programme!

The programme focuses on the development of interprofessional , collaborative practice skills in six critical domains of mental health practice. These domains have been identified in previous studies as areas in which primary health care professionals value continuing professional education. Each domain encompasses skill and content components. The first two domains are delivered through a face-to-face, on-site workshop. The remaining four domains of the project are offered through thirteen, 2 hour videoconference sessions held weekly over a period of 10 weeks.

The six domains are: interprofessional collaboration and collaborative practice in mental health; building and maintaining productive relationships with patients; using the frameworks of Stages of Change theory and Motivational Interviewing to address substance abuse; working with adolescents and their families using Solution-Focused approaches; treating depression and anxiety with Cognitive behavioural techniques; and finally, developing interprofessional Assertive Community Treatment and crisis management.

Sessions scheduled for each domain have a similar structure. At the initial session, participants are introduced to the skills and content for that area through interactive presentations and modeling. Experts present and discuss their own cases, and the participants are provided with opportunities to apply and practise the skills through small group interactive activities, such as role-playing. Following this introductory session, the emphasis shifts to encourage interaction and interprofessional collaboration. A small group format used for discussing prepared cases and the cases themselves are structured so as to promote the development of an interprofessional perspective. This provides participants with the opportunity to learn more of the roles and perspectives of their colleagues and the provisiohn of collaborative mental health care. In the final session for each domain, participants are encouraged to present their own cases.
