In Connecting Past and Present Volume One, Dr. Wilfred Martin presents a genealogical history and biographical notes on ancestors and descendants of the Martin family of Hickman's Harbour, Newfoundland.

“While growing up in Hickman's Harbour in the 1940s and early 1950s, I was interested in the life experiences of my ancestors,” said Dr. Martin, a retired professor from Memorial's Faculty of Education. The book is a result of seven years of multi-pronged research, identifying more than 3,600 individuals and more than 1,200 families, which make up the extended Martin family tree.

The book, said Dr. Martin, was begun with two purposes: the first was to identify the ancestors of the Martins, who settled in Hickman's Harbour and to determine whether there were three different Martin families or if they had a common ancestor. The second aim was to present an annotated Martin family tree, which would include dates and places of birth, marriage, death and descendants as well as biographical sketches.

Dr. Martin received degrees from Memorial and York University and has written extensively about sociology and education. He has authored a number of books including, The Negotiated Order of the School, Canadian Education: A Sociological Analysis, Voices from the Classroom and Random Island Pioneers. Dr. Martin is professor emeritus in the Faculty of Education.
