This is the first of what will be an annual report from the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International Relations) highlighting the research activities of our faculty, staff and students.

We are pleased to share with you information on Memorial University’s research activities – their nature, results and participants – and hope you enjoy exploring this report. It is a window to the breadth of research and scholarly work at Memorial University, and the positive impact we are having on our community, our country and the world.

The piece you hold in your hand is simply an introduction to some of the research taking place at Memorial. In 2001, external funding in support of research at Memorial University totalled more than $43 million. This is a 17 per cent increase over the previous year, and we expect the growth to continue. The future of both Memorial and the province of which we are such an integral part demands we continue to enhance our capacity for and reputation in scholarly, creative and scientific activities.

Memorial University’s unique contribution to the intellectual, social, cultural and economic life of Newfoundland and Labrador is founded on our research capabilities and expertise. We are fortunate to have accomplished researchers from myriad disciplines. We hope you enjoy learning about them and, as always, invite your feedback, both on the report and on research at Memorial in general.
