To what extent, if any, is Marxism compatible with, or a part of, deconstruction? And, vice versa, to what extent, if any, is deconstruction compatible with, or a part of, Marxist philosophy? This seminar course will focus on the above questions, and their forms of responsible answer, by way of a close, critical study of a collection of essays devoted to this theme, collected in M. Sprinkler, ed., Ghostly demarcations: a symposium on Jacques Derrida’s Specters of Marx (including pieces by Negri, Macherey, Jameson, Montag, Eagleton, Hamacher, and Derrida). Additional texts include Derrida’s Specters of Marx and Marx and Engels, The communist manifesto.
