Professor Hu Liu did his postsecondary education in Beijing, China and obtained B.Sc. (Pharm) and M.Sc. (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) degrees from Beijing Medical University (now Peking University).

In 1987, he came to Canada to continue with his studies in chemistry and biochemistry.

Under the supervision of Professor Robert O. Ryan he obtained his Ph.D. degree in lipid and lipoprotein biochemistry from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1993.

Subsequently, Dr. Liu did his post-doctoral research training under the guidance of Professor Raymond E. Counsell at Departments of Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA.

In 1994, he took a faculty position at the School of Pharmacy, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, NL, Canada, where he is currently a full professor. He also holds cross-appointments at the same university in the Division of BioMedical Sciences of Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Biochemistry of Faculty of Science.

From 1999 to 2004 Professor Liu was the recipient of the Career Award in Health Sciences sponsored by Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Health Research Foundation of Canada’s Research Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D-HRF).

In 2000, he was awarded with the AstraZeneca New Investigator Research Award by the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada.

He has served as an internal grants reviewer for the Pharmaceutical Sciences Committee of CIHR.

Professor Liu also holds an adjunct professorship sponsored by the Education Commission of Beijing Municipality to engage teaching and research activities at the School of Chemical Biology and Pharmaceutical Sciences of Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

His research interests include development of drugs and drug delivery systems in the areas of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and inflammation.
