N2040 - Health Assessment

Credits: Three credit hours

Prerequisite: Registered Nurse

Overview: This course focuses on the development of competencies needed to assess the health status of individuals.  A systemic approach is used to collect and analyze data related to the health status of the client.

Course Objectives:

  • Obtain a comprehensive health history using appropriate principles of communication
  • Develop a logical system for organizing health assessment data
  • Explain the accepted standard for normal use when interpreting physical assessment data
  • Perform a health assessment
  • Compare health and illness behaviours
  • Identify the ethical and legal issues and responsibilities while assessing the health status of an individual

Course Content:

  • Health Promotion
  • The health history
  • The four basic techniques of physical assessment
  • Assessing the: integument, head and neck, special senses, thorax and lungs, heart and blood vessels, breast and axillae, abdomen, extremities, genitalia
  • The complete health assessment

Evaluation: To receive credit for N2040, students must achieve a composite grade of 65 per cent.  The student is evaluated through a mid - term and final exam and a practical exam which includes assessment of a selected body system and documentation of findings.
