COME DANCING!
Dance has always been an essential part of
NAFCO, and this conference will be no different. This year's theme,
"Crossing Over", will be reflected in a variety of dance forms that
are linked to the fiddle and fiddling culture throughout the North
Atlantic. Newfoundland and Labrador is a hotbed of dance activity,
from set dancing to step dancing to classical and contemporary
dance forms. Dancers and dance scholars will be involved in
performances, workshops and conference papers and we look forward
to welcoming dancers and scholars from many
traditions.

DANCE UP!
Even before the seat belt sign has stopped flashing, your Dancing
Air Traffic Controller, Tonya Kearley will quickly
get you on the dance floor and keep you there! With the
preliminaries of easy walkthroughs out of the way, the live music
begins featuring master fiddle player Kelly
Russell. You can have 4 knees and 2 left feet and still be
a complete Dancing Master tonight. Learn our Square Sets, the
Jellyfish, and finally discover out what all the fuss is about the
damnable "Goat"!

CANADIAN OLD-TIME DANCE
Join Sherry Johnson and her NAFCo band for an
evening of good old-fashioned dancing. We'll be doing foxtrots,
two-steps, waltzes, schottisches and perhaps a couple of square
sets. There'll be instruction on the basics, and then you can
practice each dance type several times to different tunes
throughout the evening. No previous experience necessary!
Wednesday, August 6th
DANCING ON THE ATLANTIC RIM
Mats Melin and Mats Nilsson (and others tbc) are your hosts for an evening of dancing from countries bordering the North Atlantic Ocean . They'll take you along Vesterled (as the Vikings would have said for a west-bound route) as you dance your way across the Scandinavian countries, , , Cape Breton and other shores. It's NAFCo's international evening with all live music and dance instructions provided - the cheapest international trip you'll have this year and certainly a fun one.
Thursday, August 7th
CEILIDH DANCE
Here's your chance to 'Strip the Willow ', dance the 'Gay Gordons', the 'Dashing White Sergeant' and more! NAFCo's ceilidh night promises to be a lively one with Carley Williams and other NAFCo participants leading you through informal Scottish set dances. Each dance will get a walk-through and directions throughout by a caller. No special steps needed! The more dancers on the floor, the merrier.
