Finding your Physical Address and Host Name - Windows Vista and XP

Windows XP

  • Press the START button and hit run.
  • Type cmd and hit enter

  • Press the start button and type cmd into the search bar

Press the Start Button then type cmd into the search panel

  • A black window will appear. Type ipconfig/all and hit enter.
  • The window will fill with information...

Make a note of the Host Name and the Physical Address. When noting the Physical Address, its important to use the right one - often notebook computers have wireless capabilities, and these will have a separate Physical Address for the wireless connection. Look for the one that appears under "Ethernet adapter", NOT the one under "Wireless LAN adapter".

The physical address will be six sets of two alphanumeric characters.
