March 18-31: The admin office staff (Doreen, Diane and Beatrice) have been busy finalizing fiscal year end details and working on the ACOA claim as well as organizing a staff meeting that will be taking place on April 17 & 18.
March 19: Rebecca presented to the Labrador Regional Wellness Coalition for her project on developing a resiliency index for Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
March 21: Martha and Keith met with Dr. Maura Hanrahan and Dr. Mary Bluechardt to exchange updates on our institutions, particularly initiatives concerning aboriginal students.
March 21: Rebecca chaired the Board of Directors meeting for the Mokami Status of Women Council.
March 25 and 26: The Harris Centre Regional Workshop and Memorial Presents took place in Labrador West. Several LI members travelled to Labrador City to attend these events. John Thistle presented on “Community Resiliency, Navigating Boom and Bust Cycles” at the Memorial Presents event and did a CBC interview as well. While there, LI staff was fortunate enough to be given a tour of the IOC mine. The workshop was overall very successful; the report is now available here.
March 26: Rebecca met with Dr. Stephen Bornstein (Director of NL Centre for Applied Health Research) and Dr. James Rourke (Dean, Faculty of Medicine) to discuss Aboriginal Health Research priorities in Labrador.
March 27: LI staff met with Dr. Antony Card, Associate Vice President, Research, at Grenfell campus about the research projects being undertaken at the Labrador Institute and the possibility for partnerships with Grenfell Campus.
March 27: Merline met with Dr. Paul Sylvester (Department of Earth Sciences at MUN); Katura Pittman and Garth DeMont (Grand River Ironsands company); and Patricia Loder from National Research Council (NRC) of Canada to find out more about the NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) program and to discuss the possible research project with Grand River Ironsands.
March 28: The Labrador Institute hired Cynthia Colosimo and Jolene Ashini to work jointly as illustrators on our new children’s book.
