August 12: Rebecca was awarded funding from the Medical Research Foundation of the Faculty of Medicine (Memorial University) to continue development of a project to examine food security within NunatuKavut communities.
August 14: Madison Giles (a Master’s student supervised by Dr. Schiff) received notice of success in her application for a CIHR Master’s Award to support her research into HIV/AIDS prevention programs in partnership with the Labrador Friendship Centre and NunatuKavut.
August 12: John attended the Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) annual conference this week and presented on the economic history and geography of mining in Labrador. While there, John attended several meetings related to different aspects of the CAG itself and discussed with different people and groups some of the opportunities for raising the profile and visibility of northern teaching and research, particularly social scientific and historical teaching and research, as well as some of the challenges involved.
August 5-11: Merline was on fieldwork in Makkovik and Postville with Dr. Atamu Sakar (Faculty of Medicine, MUN) and Dr. Derek Wilton (Department of Earth Sciences, MUN).
