Beginning June 1, 2000, The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at Memorial University of Newfoundland, implemented a new policy regarding support for conferences.

Purpose

ISER will sponsor conferences devoted to topics of relevance to current social and economic research in Newfoundland and Labrador. ISER will no longer contribute to regular annual meetings of academic groups. ISER Books will retain right of first refusal of any publishable documents arising from ISER-sponsored conferences.

ISER Research Mandate

The purpose of the Institute shall be to undertake, sponsor and publish research within such disciplines and in such parts of the world as are deemed of relevance to Newfoundland and Labrador. Without limiting the generality of the above, research pertaining directly to social and economic development in Newfoundland and Labrador shall be of special importance.

Criteria

Applicants must submit a typewritten Conference Proposal (maximum of 6 pages) as outlined in the application form. Applicants must also append the following with the application form:


Draft programme for the conference
Written confirmation of official sponsorship of the conference
Written confirmation of attendance by invited speakers

Eligibility

Grants are available to members of Memorial University of Newfoundland and elsewhere to help defray the costs of such items as travel, subsistence, research assistance, materials and supplies associated with a conference.

Value

The maximum conference grant award is $5000.00 CAD.

Deadline Date

Applications for conference grants of $1000 or less are considered by the ISER Executive Committee. This Committee meets once during the semester.
March 1 for applications for grants in excess of $1000 and up to a maximum of $5000.

Notification of Awards

Applicants for a conference grant of $1000 or less will be notified of the award as the grants are approved by the ISER Executive Committee.
Applicants for a conference grant in excess of $1000 and up to a maximum of $5000 will be notified of the award by May 15.
