Kansai Gaidai is a private, nonprofit institution composed of Kansai Gaidai University, (four-year program), Kansai Gaidai College (two-year program), the Graduate School, and the Asian Studies Program. All the academic programs of Kansai Gaidai University are fully accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education and Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, which is the sole accrediting agency in Japan.

Location
Located in Hirakata City, Osaka, Kansai Gaidai is accessible, within a one-hour train ride, to Kyoto and Nara, the ancient capitals, and Osaka, the second largest business hub in Japan. Kansai Gaidai has two campuses in Hirakata: the Nakamiya campus and the Hotani campus. The Center for International Education, the centerpiece for the Asian Studies Program is located at the Nakamiya campus.

Highlighted programs
The Asian Studies Program (Annual Enrollment 700): One-year or one-semester program to accommodate international students wishing to pursue Japanese language and Japanese/Asian studies.

Language of instruction
All courses in the Asian Studies Program, aside from those focusing on the Japanese language, are conducted in English, it is possible for students with no previous Japanese training to pursue an in-depth study of Japan and Asia. However, the five-credit hour Spoken Japanese language course is required of all program participants; where each 50-minute class meets five times a week.

Important Dates
Application documents must be received by the Center for International Education during the following period:

  • Fall semester: January 10 - May 15
  • Winter semester: August 1 - November 1

Cost of living
It is true that living expenses in Japan are relatively high. However, the program has been making efforts in securing scholarships from the Japanese government and the University for participating students to ease their financial difficulties. Since activities and dining can be rather costly in Japan, all participants are strongly advised to bring adequate funds for their stay at Kansai Gaidai. The following are rough estimates for personal expenditures for one semester.

  • Homestay Participants:
    • Room and Board (Fees include breakfast and dinner): 320,000 yen
    • Lunch Expenses: 60,000 yen
    • Textbooks: 20,000 yen
    • Average Commuting Expenses: 70,000 yen
    • Miscellaneous: 140,000 yen
  • Dormitory Residents:
    • Room and Board: 230,000 yen
    • Meal Expenses: 150,000 yen
    • Textbooks: 20,000 yen
    • Miscellaneous: 140,000 yen
