(Contractual Position March 31, 2018 to March 31, 2019)
The Animal Care Service (ACS) at Memorial University is responsible for the oversight of all animal care and use at the University and its affiliated institutes. Program services are delivered through four core facilities associated with the St. John's campus, along with several satellite facilities. ACS is responsible for maintaining and operating the program within the federally-mandated guidelines of the Canadian Council on Animal Care to ensure program compliance for institutional accreditation. Development activities are focused on enhancing the programs, facilities and services to position Memorial University as a location of distinction for the highest standards of animal care and use, while ensuring further growth in research.
Reporting to the Director (the University Veterinarian), the successful applicant will be responsible for the management and oversight of the veterinary medical portfolio with its diverse mammalian and aquatic species. The Clinical Veterinarian will work closely with the Animal Care Services' management team, technical staff, researchers, and the Institutional Animal Care Committee to provide program delivery. Specific responsibilities include: clinical management of animal health, wellness monitoring, and experimental surgery activities; liaising with researchers and teaching faculty and students to provide pre- and post-approval input and guidance on experimental models and procedures in accordance with established guidelines, laws and practices; developing standard operating procedures and training modalities for technical and research personnel; developing solutions to problems that may arise in complex multi-species environments.
The position involves veterinary oversight of technical staff and projects in all areas pertaining to the provision of animal care. Memorial University is currently undertaking a number of projects for renovation and new construction of its animal care and use facilities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute in a positive and significant manner to the development of Memorial's new facilities and programs.
Experience (3-5 years) as a Clinical Veterinarian; graduation with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from a recognized university; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Must be eligible for Licensure in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Specific experience in research-animal, academic, or aquatic-animal environments is a strong asset. Strong interpersonal, leadership, organizational, and communication skills (written and verbal) are required, along with the ability to initiate change, manage multiple tasks, positively engage staff and the research community, and balance competing interests. Proven management skills are a strong asset.
