Musician and scholar dies at 69
Peter Narváez, a nationally-recognized folklorist and musician, passed away on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, after a two-year struggle with cancer.
Dr. Narváez taught in Memorial's Department of Folklore from 1974 until his retirement in 2005. He was cross-appointed with the School of Music.
In 2006 Dr. Narváez received the Marius Barbeau Medal from the Folklore Studies Association of Canada, a lifetime achievement award, in recognition of his contributions to Canadian folklore studies.
Upon receiving the award, Dr. Narváez described his more than 30 years in folklore/ethnology as "the work of communicating and documenting the traditional expressive behaviours of working-class cultures."
As a blues musician and advocate, Dr. Narváez also made a lasting contribution to the music industry in St. John's.
