Associate director (communications) appointed

For the Division of Marketing and Communications' newest team member, joining the group as associate director (communications) has taken Paula Dyke full circle back to Memorial University.

As a teenager growing up in Greenspond on Newfoundland's northeast coast, there was never any question in Ms. Dyke's mind that she would graduate from high school and head to St. John's to attend Memorial. It was 1990 and the Internet had not yet flung open the doors to unlimited information and unlimited choices.

But with writing as her passion and a desire to see what the rest of Atlantic Canada had to offer, Ms. Dyke's path has taken her back and forth from her native province a couple of times. The first was to attend the University of King's College in Halifax, N.S., where she obtained a bachelor of journalism (honours) degree in 1994, before heading back home to work in broadcast journalism and then public relations for the next decade or so.

Most recently, Ms. Dyke spent the past six years in Moncton, N.B., leading Atlantic Lottery's communications department as director of stakeholder relations and corporate communications.

Bringing 15 years of public relations experience gained in government, labour and private sectors, Ms. Dyke's focus is telling an organization's story directly through public relations efforts and well-executed stakeholder relations plans.
"One of the most important roles a communications professional can perform is finding ways to connect people to the organization they represent," she said. "The tools, the stories and success will vary, but the goal remains clear – to find a place in the hearts of stakeholders that is owned by Memorial. I'm glad to join a team that does that every day."
