The Grenfell Opera Series presents Mozart’s Don Giovanni
By Pamela Gill
The Grenfell Opera Series will present Mozart’s Don Giovanni as the series continues on Sunday, Feb. 6.
Edwin Bezzina, organizer of the series, said Don Giovanni is one of Mozart’s greatest operas. He said it is a story about the infamous Venetian aristocrat who uses murder and deceit to feed his dark licentious passions. The opera ends on a note of tragedy, but perhaps justice as well, although there there is some comic relief to break the tension along the way.
The piece to be shown is the the film version directed by Joseph Losey in conjunction with the Paris Opera featuring Ruggero Raimondi, Edda Moser and Kiri Te Kanawa in the title roles.
Dr. Bezzina said that this is a lavish production with some wonderful scenes of Venice and the surrounding area.
The Opera Series is happy to welcome Dr. Jennifer Matthews, who holds a PhD from the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, who will provide an introduction to the opera.
The film will be shown Sunday, Feb. 6, 7 p.m. in room FC-2014 of the Forest Centre. Refreshments will be served.
