Theatre and Drama Specialization
The Faculty of Arts offers a BA in theatre and drama, an interdisciplinary program that offers students an introduction to theatre and drama. Students in this specialization will gain practical experience in the theatre in addition to studying dramatic literature.
To complete this major in the BA (English) program you must complete the first year English requirements as outlined in the university Calendar and take the following:
A. 2000, 2002, 3350, 3351, 4400, 4401, and one of 3200 or 3201 and 4300 or 4301.
B. one of 3156, 3171, 3260, or 4302.
C. one of 3021, 3022, 3181, or 3302.
Students will enter this specialization at the beginning of their third year. The four required theatre courses (see below) will be taken, in order, in the final four semesters of the BA program. (Non-theatre specialists may also register for these courses.)
- ENGLISH 3350. Theatre. An introduction to principles of directing and acting, through lectures, discussion, and stage productions. Six hours a week of lectures/workshops.
- ENGLISH 3351. The Physical Stage. An introduction to the fundamentals and vocabulary of design, lighting and stagecraft, including sound properties, video technique, film/video craft, etc. The history and development of stage techniques from the Greek theatre to the present day will be studied. Six hours a week of lectures/workshops.
- ENGLISH 4400. Directing the Play. An exploration of the theories of the late 19th century and early 20th century directors and execution of two practical projects: scene work and a one-act play.
- ENGLISH 4401. Producing the Play. A full semester working with a selected play, to culminate in public performance. Students will be required to participate fully in all aspects of production, except direction, which will be the responsibility of the instructor.
A large number of faculty members in the Department of English are involved in teaching drama courses.
