A former University Research Professor in the Department of Linguistics, Sandra Clarke has a long-standing interest in Newfoundland English as well as Labrador Innu-aimun.
Her research has focused on social – and more recently, regional – aspects of language variation in Newfoundland and Labrador. Her publications include the (edited) 1993 volume Focus on ... Canada (Amsterdam, Benjamins); she is currently working on a volume on Newfoundland English to appear in 2009 (Edinburgh University Press).
She is a former President of both the Canadian Linguistic Association and the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association, and serves on the editorial boards of several international linguistics journals. In 2007 she was named Professor Emerita.
