A former University Research Professor in the Department of Linguistics, Sandra Clarke has a long-standing interest in Newfoundland English as well as Labrador Innu-aimun.
Her research has focused on social – and more recently, regional – aspects of language variation in Newfoundland and Labrador. Her publications include the (edited) 1993 volume Focus on ... Canada (Amsterdam, Benjamins); Newfoundland and Labrador English (2010, Edinburgh University Press).
She is a former President of both the Canadian Linguistic Association and the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association, and serves on the editorial boards of several international linguistics journals. In 2007 she was named Professor Emerita. In 2013, Dr. Clarke (along with colleagues Harold Paddock, Philip Hiscock and Robert Hollett) launched the award-winning online Dialect Atlas of Newfoundland and Labrador to much public and academic acclaim.
