Laboratory and Members
Marcus Moore (M.Sc. Student: 2012 to Present). Marcus has a B.Sc. from Memorial University and is currently working on the activation of silent natural product gene clusters in Streptomyces clavuligerus. Some of these never before seen metabolites could function as novel antibiotics, anticancer agents or could have other medicinal applications.
Nicole Ferguson (M.Sc. Student: 2012 to Present). Nicole has a B.Sc. from Central College (USA) and joined the laboratory in June 2012. Her project is focused on using proteomics to understand the cellular processes involved during antibiotic production in bacteria.
Milka Podder (M.Sc. Student: 2012 to Present). Milka received her bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Dhaka (Bangladesh). Her project involves studying the molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), the causative agent of Johne's disease in cattle. MAP is also thought to be associated with Crohn's disease in human patients. As a side project, Milka is also looking at antibiotic resistance in specific strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, a pathogen of interest in veterinary and human medicine. She is co-supervised by Dr. Hugh Whitney (Provincial Chief Veterinary Officer, NL).
