  • Major and Minor in Law and Society
  • Major and Minor in Medieval Studies
  • Minor in Newfoundland and Labrador Studies
  • Major in Police Studies

Summary of Program Changes

The regulations governing all of Arts interdisciplinary major and minor programs have been updated, and so have the requirements of each individual program. This includes:

  • clearer and more consistent calendar entries;
  • clarity that students are expected to plan their program of study by consulting with the program coordinator;
  • encouragement for students to declare their program of study;
  • a requirement for courses from a minimum of three Arts programs, with a maximum of five courses for majors (three courses for minors) taken from any one discipline other than the interdisciplinary program itself;
  • updated lists of eligible courses and removal of less relevant courses;
  • organization of core program courses into a “Table 1” list, with supplemental Arts courses identified in a “Table 2” list;
  • prioritization of courses listed in the Faculty of Arts course listings, rather than courses from other faculties; and,
  • a clearer process detailing the mechanism to add courses that may appear to warrant inclusion.

Questions and Answers

What is an interdisciplinary program?

Undergraduate interdisciplinary major and minor programs consist of courses that deal with a common topic from a variety of departments within the Faculty of Arts. This normally prioritizes core courses and is supplemented by other courses that bring different approaches to the study of the subject matter. Each program is administered by a coordinator, who may be supported by a program committee.

Who are “grandparented” students who can follow the old program regulations?

Students who, prior to September 2014, had completed a 2000-level course or higher in an interdisciplinary major or minor is eligible to choose between following the new program regulations or the old program regulations. Normally, grandparented students who are close to completing their program will carry on following the old regulations, while those grandparented students who are at the early stages of their program are encouraged to consider following the new regulations. All other students may follow the new regulations only.

Who should I contact with questions?

Students pursuing an interdisciplinary major or minor are encouraged to consult the newest edition of the university calendar to become familiar with the new program regulations. They should also consult their program’s webpage on the Faculty of Arts website. Questions should be directed to the relevant program coordinator:

  • Minor in Aboriginal Studies: Doug Wharram (Dept. of Linguistics)
  • Major in Communication Studies: Erwin Warkentin (Dept. of German/Russian)
  • Minor in Film Studies: John Buffinga (Dept. of German/Russian)
  • Major and Minor in Law and Society: Pat Dold (Dept. of Religious Studies)
  • Major and Minor in Medieval Studies: Seamus O’Neill (Dept. of Philosophy)
  • Minor in Newfoundland and Labrador Studies: Paul DeDecker (Dept. of Linguistics)
  • Major in Police Studies: Renee Shute

Please note that the current university Calendar should always be consulted when planning your program.
