Current Research

My current research is exploring the way various Amerindian groups inhabiting the island of Newfoundland during the Archaic period interacted with each other, their mainland neighbours, and the landscapes in which they dwelled. My approach focuses on the distribution of diagnostic artifacts of the period in Newfoundland and their relationship to those found in adjacent mainland regions, the routes of travel linking these various regions together, changes in sea level and coastal morphology and their effects on the archaeological record and our interpretations of it, and landscape theory.

This research is funded, in part, by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council through a Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship. The tools and methods used to reconstruct the evolution of palaeo-landscapes and their palaeo-environments are the result of an ongoing collaborative research endeavour facilitated by the Submerged Landscape Archaeological Network (SLAN), regrouping researchers from a number of academic and governmental institutions in both Ireland and Canada.
