Brittany Ellerbrok

     The Fortress of Louisbourg

Brittany’s MA research is centered on exploring the life histories of a group of individuals excavated from a mass burial site discovered at the Fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, NS. Her research involves using stable (carbon, nitrogen and oxygen) and radiogenic (strontium) isotope analysis to reconstruct the group’s diet and demographic origins which will help explore the hypothesis that the mass burial individuals are deceased members of a New England garrison who overwintered at the Fortress after their successful siege in 1745. The overarching goal of her work is to expand on our current understanding of how isotopic analysis can be used to illuminate the historical and archaeological record in colonial contexts.
