Sonja is an Honourary Research Professor of biological anthropology, specializing in work with human skeletal remains. She joined the faculty of the Anthropology Department/Archaeology Unit at Memorial University in 1971 and in the ensuing years has been involved in teaching and supervising in both the undergraduate and graduate programmes. Included in her teaching each year are courses in the human skeleton, human palaeopathology, and forensic anthropology. She has been a consultant to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner/Provincial Pathologist of Newfoundland and Labrador since 1987. In addition, she has worked in the field on forensic cases with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) and with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)
