New minister of education

Joan Burke is the new minister of Education.

Joan Burke has replaced Tom Hedderson as the provincial minister of Education.

The move was among a series of shifts in the provincial cabinet announced by Premier Danny Williams Nov. 8.

Ms. Burke retained the post of minister responsible for the status of women.

Mr. Hedderson becomes minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

Ms. Burke represents the district of St. George's-Stephenville East in the House of Assembly. Raised in Bishop's Falls, in 1987 she earned a degree in Social Work at Memorial University. She graduated in 1990 from the University of Toronto with a master's degree in Social Work.

The premier also shifted Tom Rideout to minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and minister responsible for aboriginal affairs and named him Deputy Premier, moved Trevor Taylor to transportation, and named Paul Shelley minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment; minister responsible for Labrador affairs; and minister responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing.
