General Admission Requirements

Credential

Caribbean Secondary Examinations Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) or at least one year of study at a recognized Junior College, College or University.

 

Required Subject Areas

  1. English
  2. Mathematics*
  3. Laboratory Science* (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics)
  4. Social Studies or Modern/Classical Language
  5. Elective

*Students who are missing an eligible course in subject groups 2, 3 or 4, who apply for admission to a program that does not require completion of these courses, will be considered for general admission. In this case, an eligible course in subject groups 1, 2, 3 or 4 may be used to substitute the missing course. Students who are missing eligible courses in two subject areas should contact admissions@mun.ca.

 

General Admission Criteria

Grade requirement
  • Applicants are required to hold a Caribbean Examinations Council Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) with a minimum grade of 2 in the required subject areas; and a minimum of two 2-unit subjects on the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) or successful completion of at least one year of study at a recognized Junior College, College or University. Exceptional students may be considered based on their CSEC results.
English language proficiency
  • Proof of English language proficiency beyond diploma completion is normally not required. Refer to our English language requirements for further details.
Competitive program entry (if applicable)
  • Admission to some programs is competitive for a limited number of spaces. A higher admission average and/or supplementary information may be required as part of the faculty-specific admissions.

 

Additional Notes

Completion of CAPE subject examinations with minimum scores may qualify accepted applicants for course-based transfer credit. Refer to our transfer credit process for further details.

If you have not yet completed CAPE

When you apply (early decision)
  • If final CAPE results are not yet available, a provisional decision may be possible using the official CSEC certificate and predicted grades of CAPE or an interim transcript.
  • Proof of English language proficiency (if required). See general admission criteria section above.
  • Supplementary information required for competitive-entry programs may be required with your application.
    • If you are applying for admission to nursing or fine arts, you should e-mail an unofficial copy of your transcript, showing mid-year grade/progress report (issued by your school in January/February) no later than March 1.
When you complete your examinations (final decision)
  • Official CSEC and CAPE results sent by post or courier from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) or certified copies of your final CSEC and CAPE certificates sent by post or courier directly to the Office of the Registrar.
    If applicable, an official transcript sent directly from the Junior College, College or University will also be required.

 

If you have completed CAPE examinations

  • Official CSEC and CAPE results sent by post or courier from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) or certified copies of your final CSEC and CAPE certificates sent by post or courier directly to the Office of the Registrar.
    If applicable, an official transcript sent directly from the Junior College, College or University will also be required.
  • Proof of English language proficiency (if required). See general admission criteria section above.
  • Supplementary information required for competitive-entry programs may be required with your application.
