President's Message

Dear Members,

It is an absolute honor and privilege to serve as the President of the Teaching Assistants’ Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland (TAUMUN). On behalf of TAUMUN, I would like to welcome you all to one of the largest teaching assistants’ unions in the province.

A union is an organized association of workers formed to protect their rights and interests. TAUMUN was accredited as a union by the Newfoundland and Labrador Labor Relations Board in August 2009. Since then, TAUMUN has been fighting for the rights of the Graduate Assistants, Research Assistants, and Teaching Assistants of the Memorial University of Newfoundland. We diligently and persistently work together to assist in negotiation with University authorities to maximize the welfares and to ensure a safe work environment for its members.

We believe that by engaging the general members with TAUMUN, we can make the union most successful. Hence, we arrange several recreational and academic events throughout the year, such as TA training, Lunch and Learn series, excursions, etc. These events help graduate students develop themselves personally and professionally. Moreover, these events create bonding among the members.

As per the agreement with the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), TAUMUN gets the opportunity to attend several conferences. We ensure the involvement of general members in those conferences as well.

We represent TAUMUN at the orientation program of the university to introduce our activities to the new students.

Finally, the executive committee works with new ideas and enthusiasm for the betterment of the TAUMUN. We hope we will get your appreciation and active participation in our various events to make those successful.

Together, we are powerful and can make our union better and stronger.

Best wishes,
Sudipta Chakraborty
President (October 2021 - Present)
Teaching Assistants’ Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland (TAUMUN)
