Experiential Learning

In keeping with Teaching & Learning Framework 2023, we work with faculty members to facilitate and manage experiential learning in and out of the classroom.

We offer a small start-up fund for faculty experiential learning initiatives.

We have a wide range of community contacts, resources, and best practices to share with you.

Some recent experiential learning partnerships:

Conversation Circle

Along with students from other disciplines, Modern Language and Linguistics students participated in the weekly Conversation Circle with the Association for New Canadians.

Political Science 4600

Student Life facilitates Entry and Exit reflection sessions for all students undergoing the Political Science Internship, to enhance the learning oppoortunity and gain as much as possible from their experiences.

Mobilizing Knowledge on the East Coast Trail

From 2016-2019, Student Life partnered with the Departments of Computer Sciences, Modern Languages, Geography, Faculty of Business, Faculty of HKR, the QEII Map Room, Graduate Studies, and the East Coast Trail Association (ECTA) in an interdisciplinary, experiential learning project. Students used skills and data acquired within their academic program towards the creation of an iOS mobile application for hiking the East Coast Trail. During the project, Geography and HKR students collected and processed data in the field and in the lab to digitally map the trail. Modern Language Students (German and French) translated maps as part of their curricula and during MUCEP placements.  Faculty and East Coast Trail Association staff, volunteers, and contractors helped mentor students in the office and in the field. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to put their academics into practice. To learn more about this project, read the Gazette story "Shared Responsibility."

Pharmacy 2010: Service Learning

In this mandatory course for the PharmD program, students complete the requirements of the Student Volunteer Bureau Bronze Level. This consists of 20 hours helping people in a community group of their choice (such as the Canadian Red Cross, Let's Talk Science, Ronald McDonald House, and Cadets Canada), a professional development session and reflection session facilitated by Student Life staff. In addition, students write a reflective essay for submission to their instructor.
