June Kirkland-Smith is a Field Education Coordinator with the School of Social Work. She is mainly responsible for coordinating and developing field placements for graduate students and bachelor’s students in the community and outside of St. John’s and the province. June acts as an off-site Field Instructor, participates on the Equity & Diversity Committee and is also a sessional instructor in social work practice courses.
June has spent the last 33 years working in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) with the last 25 being with Eastern Health, in a variety of coordinating and direct practice roles. She was instrumental in implementing the Central Intake Program for Children and Youth Mental Health & Addictions. She has direct experience in working with children and families with chronic health struggles, disability, mental health, psychiatric issues and trauma backgrounds. She has leadership in providing mentoring and training to social workers in a variety of program and service areas. Prior to working with Eastern Health, June spent several years working in the community with women’s shelters, employment programs and children’s stabilization services.
June completed both her MSW in 1994 and BSW in 1987 through Memorial. She was also certified in Reality Therapy Control Theory Psychology from the William Glasser Institute in 1989. Through the years June has maintained her education by both offering and participating in multiple in-service and educational workshops on a variety of social work topics. She has presented to several social workers, clinical and educational staff on issues related to child and adult mental health issues and services. She co-presented on Anxiety in Children at the NL Psychologists and Counsellor’s Association Conference in 2012, Self-Harming for the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Social Workers (NLASW) provincial teleconference in 2017, Childhood Trauma at the Labrador Regional Wellness Coalition Conference in 2018, and Child & Adolescent Mental Health for a Canadian Association of Social Workers webinar in 2018.
Currently June sits on the executive of the NLASW Board of Directors and is a member of the NLASW Editorial Committee. She was the chair for the Social Work Council at Eastern Health for three years and in the past has participated on a variety of volunteer boards and committees.
