Dr. Tanya Gillan
Molecular Geneticist
Acting Division Chair of the Medical Genetics Laboratory
Eastern Health

Dr. Gillan is a Clinical Cytogeneticist and Molecular Geneticist and acting Division Chief of the Medical Genetics Laboratory (MGL) at Eastern Health, NL. She oversees clinical genetic testing for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The MGL provides complex genetic testing and diagnoses for a variety of genetic conditions including Fragile X syndrome, Huntington disease, thrombophilia, hereditary cancer, leukemia, infertility and prenatal.

Dr. Gillan received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, NS. From there she pursed her interest in genetics and medical sciences and obtained a Master of Science from Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, where she was part of the team that identified the Niemann-Pick disease Type D gene. Dr. Gillan then obtained her PhD in Oncology at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, where she worked on identifying candidate Wilms tumor genes. After her PhD, Dr. Gillan wanted to combine her love of genetics, research and teaching with her desire to impact patient health and embarked on a three year clinical Fellowship in cytogenetics and molecular genetics with the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Calgary, AB. Upon completion of her Fellowship, Dr. Gillan worked for 8 years as a Clinical Cytogeneticist and Molecular Geneticist at the Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver, BC, which was a high volume diagnostic and referral lab for the BC Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Program. In 2015, Dr. Gillan moved back to the east coast to take a position with Eastern Health as Division Chief, Medical Genetics Laboratory.

Dr. Gillan is passionate about the area of clinical genetics and genomics and is thrilled to be part of this continuously evolving and exciting field. She enjoys the clinical workload as well as the opportunity to participate in research and teaching and thereby passing on her love of science and genetics to future scientists.
