Funding and Expenses

Funding

The most common financial support for graduate students comes in the form of School of Graduate Studies Fellowships, valued at $9000 per year (M.Sc. students) or $10,000 per year (PhD students). This type of support is available on a competitive basis for students registered in the MSc and PhD programs. Unfortunately, no fellowship support is available for students registered in the course-based Master of Environmental Science program. Students will be informed of their level of financial support as part of the acceptance letter that the University sends to each individual. Admission is not normally offered to self-funded applicants.

Supplementary funding may be provided from the research funds of a student's thesis supervisor and from a limited number of teaching assistantships.

Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada who have excellent academic records should apply for provincially or federally funded scholarships and bursaries. For example, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) offers scholarships to exceptionally well prepared graduate students. Normally, students would apply for these scholarships in the Fall of the final year of their undergraduate programme. The Head of your undergraduate department should be able to advise you on how to apply for NSERC scholarships.
